How to choose an online theology degree that fits your calling

Glovim academic office · September 15, 2026

Four questions worth answering before you enrol anywhere: your level, your time, how you are taught, and what the degree is actually for.

People come to theological study from very different places — a new believer wanting to read Scripture properly, a lay leader already teaching a class, a pastor who has served for twenty years without formal study. The right online theology degree depends less on the name of the program than on four honest answers.

1. What level are you ready for?

Glovim offers four levels: the Associate of Biblical Studies as a first grounding, the Bachelor of Biblical Studies as a full undergraduate program, the Master of Arts in Theology for those who already hold a degree, and the Doctorate in Theology for experienced leaders ready for sustained research. Starting one level too high is the most common reason students stall.

2. How much time do you genuinely have each week?

Online study forgives an odd schedule; it does not forgive absence. Look at the number of credits in the program and ask what a normal week of reading and writing looks like alongside your work and family.

3. How are you taught?

Some programs are entirely self-directed. At Glovim, courses are structured with modules, set assignments, and faculty who respond to your work, alongside live classes taught over video that anyone may join.

4. What do you want the degree to do?

Be clear with yourself. If the goal is to teach Scripture faithfully in your own congregation, choose the program that gives you the most Scripture and the most practice writing about it. Ask any college directly about its standing and recognition before you enrol, and take the answer in writing.
